My Protanoptic Life

If you want to see how many photos your camera has taken, take a photo and upload it to Flickr, then look at the EXIF data.  The “Image Number” field is the number of shutter actuations of the camera body that took the photo.  This is a useful piece of information when reselling a selling used gear, and generally neat to know if you take a lot of photos.  I’m adding a graph of actuations vs time to my to-do list for flixplor.com.

I say that if you want to shoot in natural light, you have to shoot in a place with advantageously natural lighting. If that lighting is under control, set it up advantageously and leave it, then when it comes time to shoot it's natural.

I recently got a message about my 3d photos, so I decided to whip out the old toy lens with some flash action for my 365 shot today. With ƒ/11 it took two SB900's at M 1/2 to fill the room with light, triggered via CLS.

I still wish the Loreo had a wider ocular separation and a wider field of view. This shot here is probably the best perspective for the Loreo. Any closer and it won't focus, much farther away and you lose the 3d effect.

Today Tien and I woke up late, went dancing in Golden Gate Park, then met up with Karen and drove to the Marin Headlands for a picnic.

Tien went down a fireman pole for the first time tonight, in the dark even! She was really scared to do it but I coaxed her into it. Then I made her go down a big slide too. It's almost like I have to force this girl to have fun sometimes!

Tien and I went out with Zach and Alecia tonight. We had pizza at the same place where Tien first had pizza in America and didn't like it much, but this time she loved it. Her tastes have adapted quite a bit to the foods that are available in America, and things like pizza and sushi which she used to deplore are now among her favorites.

Donna came to SF to visit today. It was the first time I'd seen her since January, so it was great to see her. Tien hadn't met her yet either. Tien and I went out with Donna and Lily to È Tutto Qua, a fantastic Italian restaurant a few blocks from our house.

Tonight was the date of the mid-autum festival which coincides with the rising of a large harvest moon just before the sun sets. Tien and I missed the harvest moon rise, but managed to catch the sunset from Coit Tower. We hope to spend this day in Vietnam in a year or two. Tien says that couples light candles and float them off down the river in paper boats.

Since Nathan and Meredith's wedding was in Colorado, I padded the weekend wedding plans with an some extra time to visit family. Tien and I were so happy that all of our family managed to come up to my sister's house and we all got to visit for several hours. My parents and grandmother left before I took this photo. Also, it's just a coincidence that all the girls are barefoot and the guys are not. :P

My friend Nathan Witmer married Meredith Roberts today. Tien and I flew out to Colorado for the occasion. There has been a terrible fire in Boulder over the past few weeks, but luckily it didn't interfere with the wedding and everything was wonderful.

Went down to San Jose to meet up with my financial advisor and then meet up with some old amigo's for lunch. Good times, can't believe I hadn't hung out with these guys since I've been back from Asia.

Went looking for a new place in Mission today. Ended up deciding against it, but it'll be a great place for somebody, I'm sure.

A simple two flash shot, trying out a new umbrella front camera left and a smaller umbrella back camera right, triggered with Nikon CLS. The reflection in her eyes is strange, not too keen on the highlights from the silver lining slipping out from behind the shoot-through film.

Tien and I drove to Año Nuevo today, exploring a few things along the coast. Gotta get some use out of my car before I sell it! The fog rolled in a 4, so we stayed and enjoyed it for a while before it got cold.

I haven't experimented in a while, so here's a gritty tonemapped HDR made from like 10 photos in an entirely new workflow that doesn't involve photomatix and totally destroys the tone curve.
